Why Every Small Business Needs a Content Strategy (and How to Establish It!)

January 30, 2019

Disclaimer: this is a paid guest post.

Every digital marketing campaign for brands relies on content. As a matter of fact, all successful digital marketing campaigns on the market have great, compelling content at their core. Everything about your marketing efforts is about content essentially, from the product descriptions you write for your marketplace entries to the videos you share on YouTube. And if you’re not already blogging as a small business, then     you should be!

Having a content strategy is a must. Maintaining control over how digital marketing content is planned, created, and delivered is the key to running a successful digital marketing campaign. That is why, in this article, we are going to take a closer look at why every small business needs a content strategy, and how you can formulate one for your brand.

Let’s talk Content Strategy

In today’s marketing landscape, having a compelling story is crucial. Users – the audience – are more likely to follow your online activities when you have a good story that they are invested in. The way you tell your story and how you manage the whole strategy will get you closer to the level of success you are aiming for.

A content strategy ties everything together. Rather than tackling content creation from a smaller point of view, you need a comprehensive content strategy to stay true to the bigger picture.

For example, a content strategy can detail the kind of messages you want to convey throughout the year, the best ways to convey those messages, and information about the content that will be used. This is how content strategy connects everything. As you move from one digital marketing campaign to the next, you always have a content strategy keeping your campaigns seamless.

So, Do You Need a Content Strategy? Even as a small business?

The simple answer is yes! The market is changing rapidly and becoming more competitive. You have other companies fighting for the same market segment, despite the market growing. Without a bigger picture for the audience to follow, it would be difficult to get your message across in a coherent way.

The purpose of a content strategy is eliminating this issue. A content strategy can cover multiple marketing campaigns; you can even have a content strategy for the entire year. Once the content strategy is in place, it is also much easier to work on the content tactics for  individual campaigns.

Everything is based on the main (long-term) storyline. There are sites that will walk you through setting up your site and getting going with blogging. Social media pages are just as easy to use, and can be outsourced cheaply if it’s not your skillset. (more on why outsourcing could help you as a small business here)

Making Your Own Content Strategy

How do you want your brand to be seen on the market? What are the platforms you want to utilize? More importantly, how much money is allocated for content-related activities?

The further you dig into these questions, the more you will understand how to best craft an effective content strategy. You can integrate branding elements, the core values you maintain as a company (such as being a luxury brand, a sustainable brand or having a certain kind of audience), and other big messages into the strategy. What you are doing at this point is basically creating the big story!

Next, that big story needs to be translated into campaigns, content, and real activities inside and outside the business itself. With a clear content strategy, choosing the right platforms to use, identifying the tactics that work best for the target audience, and researching how to reach your target audience better are all easier to do. Good stories create a community-so consider starting a facebook group for your consumers, or even a twitter chat! Find bloggers in your niche and ask if they’d like to team up on guest posts and reviews.

A comprehensive content strategy is an investment that will offer high returns for small businesses. You know the big messages to deliver and with a clear content plan, you’ll be much more effective at delivering them!
