11 Independent Publications to read and support this month

November 10, 2020

Today I want to talk about something a little bit different. With us relying on the media more and more often for our news, it’s really important to make sure we choose wisely on the links we click on.

One thing I’ve been trying to do more and more of is purposely not go straight to the usual websites and trying to support independent publications. After all, I know like most bloggers just how much clicks, views and shares can make SUCH a difference to a publication.

What’s the difference between a blog and a publication? Well, the sites I’ve covered usually have a team of contributors rather than a single person behind them. Being a freelance writer, I also know just how much a growing readership can help pay more freelance writers so it goes in a full circle! Here are some of my favourites…

1. Lacuna Voices

Punteha who runs Lacuna Voices is on a mission to present clickbait-free stories and the site is such a breath of fresh air! I read this story recently on Period Parties and thought it was fascinating and can confirm the editor is amazing to work with: I recently wrote about my journey as a chronically ill parent. You can also pitch to Punteha here.

2. The Breakdown

Journalist Hattie has created The Breakdown to talk about important mental health topics and you can support the site via Patreon.

3. The Overtake

The Ovetake was created in response to the fact so much of the news and media is London-centric; which as a brummie I can really relate to!

4. Mumernity

I’m cheating a little here to mention my own site but I’m proud of it! Mumernity is an honest motherhood publication I set up in August; since I really wanted to talk about the realities of motherhood-such as sex, careers, periods, and postnatal mental health. I’m lucky to have had some amazing writers for the site.

5. Posability

Posability is a print publication written for those of us with disabilities and chronic conditions.

6. Isabella and Us

Isabella and Us is a beautifully designed, uplifting motherhood zine that can be purchased both as a print or digital copy.

7. Underpinned

I’ve previously worked with Underpinned but read their magazine every week. It’s a digital magazine for those of us who are freelance; packed full of amazing content.

8. Chickpea magazine

Thanks to @theirritablevegan on Instagram for recommending this one! Chickpea magazine is an AD free plant-based magazine.

9. Stack magazine subscription

Stack magazine is a subscription that sends you a different independently published print magazine through your letterbox each month. You have no idea what you’re getting so it’s a great way to vary your reading material.

10. The Rural Travel Guide

A rural travel directory of all the most amazing places to explore in the UK-post-lockdown of course! As someone who lives in the country, this has got me feeling inspired!

11. Pebble Magazine

Pebble is an amazing sustainable lifestyle magazine which I’ve loved ever since it was launched! There’s so much information around being plastic-free, eco-friendly, and sustainable.
