Starting your own business from scratch is a huge endeavour. It means you have taken the leap and left the 9-to-5 rat race in order to carve your own path in the world. As a small business owner, you’ll be able to work according to your own schedule, be your own boss, and have complete control over your life.

But there are challenges. Building a successful company from the ground up is a difficult process, fraught with risks and obstacles at every corner. In fact, most small businesses do not survive beyond their first year, so you have a lot of work to do if you want to get it right.

One of the main reasons so many start-ups struggle is a lack of financial resources. There are so many costs associated with running a business, from computers and software to raw materials and overhead costs. Not to mention the fact that you likely won’t be earning a steady salary and it will take you some time to build up a solid customer base.

You need to watch every single penny you spend in order to keep your cash flow in check. By being financially cautious from the outset, you will build good habits that will enable you to avoid overspending and keep yourself in business. Here are a few ways you can save money as an entrepreneur.

Manage time effectively

In business, time is money. The more efficient you can be with the limited hours in each day, the better your chances of making money and sparking sustainable growth. Reduce your dependence on productivity black holes like social media, emails, and meetings and use your time more wisely.

Buy in bulk

There’s a lot of equipment required for starting a business and the costs can really rack up over time. Although it might be tempting to buy these items in small quantities to reduce your initial outlay, often it’s more cost effective to buy in bulk. Although you’ll be putting more money down upfront, the price per unit will be cheaper. So whether it’s materials for your products, stationery for your office, or banquette seating for your bistro restaurant, sometimes more is less.

Negotiate with suppliers

When dealing with suppliers, the figure they quote you is not necessarily the final price. There is often room for negotiation, so if the cost is too high for your business, try to work with them to drop the price. If they won’t back down then you may be better off trying to find a different supplier. Just remember that you should never compromise on quality just for a cheaper price.

Audit your expenses

Take a good look at how you are spending your money. It may be that you have some unnecessary expenses that you could cut down on. Maybe you are paying over the odds on your internet provider, or are ordering too much of a certain product each month. Scrutinising your cash flow will enable you to spot discrepancies and rectify them before they become a major problem.
